Many people warn of the dangers that come from excessive cell phone usage, especially texting. A recent study found that if you don’t put down the phone once in a while, you may end up with back pain.

Cell Phone Use May Cause Back PainHumans were designed to stand upright, but many people tend to bend their head forward while using their phones. This puts pressure on the spine. The average adult head weighs between 10-12 lbs, but tilting it just 15 degrees puts 27 lbs of pressure on the spine. Making this a habit may lead to back problems later on. Some parents 5 News talked to seem to be concerned about their children’s cell phone usage.

“They do text a lot, particularly my son. He does look down, back and forth. He doesn’t have any pain or anything now, but it’s certainly something we’ll look to see if he starts showing any signs of anything like that,” said Tom Davis, Upshur County resident.

Some doctors say that good posture increases levels of testosterone and serotonin in the body and is even linked with personality traits like tolerance for risk-taking. Those who conducted the study defined good posture as having the ears aligned with the shoulders and shoulder blades retracted.
