Did you know there is a foundation dedicated exclusively to increasing awareness about chronic pain and research to resolve such? The National Headache Foundation and U.S. Pain Foundations are working this month to raise awareness of those suffering from chronic pain in honor of September’s Pain Awareness Month.

The National Headache Foundation is proud to join the U.S. Pain Foundation this Pain Awareness Month. There are no shortage of activities you and your friends and family can participate in to raise awareness for individuals affected by chronic pain, including migraine and other headache disorders.

Chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans. It’s the leading cause of disability and the primary reason for doctor’s visits. Still, as you may have experienced with your headache or migraine, it’s often misunderstood and under-treated.

This September the U.S. Pain Foundation is leading the efforts for Pain Awareness Month, a national campaign to increase awareness about chronic pain.

“We talk a lot about the opioid crisis, but we don’t talk much about chronic pain,” Paul Gileno, president and founder of the U.S. Pain Foundation said in a press release. “In order to effectively address the opioid epidemic, we should also be thinking about how to address the parallel problem of chronic pain, whether by providing more funding for pain research, encouraging insurers to provide more coverage for nonpharmaceutical treatment options, or creating better support services for people and families affected by pain.”
